The Best Time to Visit Zimbabwe
There is no single best month. There are two — one for the falls, one for the wildlife — and a table that tells you which is which.
Last checked 26 October 2026
The short answer
For Victoria Falls, May to August gives the best combination of water volume and visibility, though peak flow in April brings the most spray. For wildlife, July to October is the dry season, when animals concentrate at water and Hwange is at its best. If you want one trip that does both comfortably, aim for late July to early September.

The two windows, and why they differ
Zimbabwe's seasons are driven by rain, and the country's two headline experiences respond to it in opposite directions. The Zambezi floods after the rainy season, so Victoria Falls is at its most dramatic in April and May. Wildlife watching gets better as the country dries out, because animals gather at the remaining water from July onwards.
That means the answer to "when should I go" depends on which of those two you are planning around. If you are doing both, late July to early September is the compromise: the falls still have good volume, the bush is drying and game viewing is improving.

Victoria Falls: high water versus low water
The falls are widest and loudest from February to May, when the Zambezi carries the runoff from the Angolan highlands. At peak, the spray column can rise hundreds of metres and soak you from the viewpoint. That is spectacular, but it can also hide the falls themselves — photographs become white mist.
From June to September the flow drops to a still-impressive level and the view clears. This is when most people find the falls most photogenic. From October to December the water is low: parts of the cliff face are exposed, the spray is minimal, and you can see the geology that the high-water season hides.
| Season | What you get | Trade-off |

Hwange and the dry season
Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park, and its game viewing follows the water. As the pans dry from June onwards, elephants, buffalo, lion and antelope concentrate around the remaining pumps and waterholes. By August and September the sightings are reliable rather than lucky.
October is the peak of the dry season: the best game viewing of the year, and the least comfortable. Temperatures can push past 35°C, the bush is stripped bare, and the dust is everywhere. If you can tolerate the heat, it is also quieter and cheaper than July and August.
- Best months for Hwange: July to October.
- Best for birding: November to March, when migratory species arrive.
- Best for green landscapes and photography: January to March.
- Best for combining falls and safari: late July to early September.
The Eastern Highlands and the rest of the country
The Eastern Highlands — Nyanga, Chimanimani, Vumba — are a different climate from the lowveld: cooler, wetter, and green for longer. April to August is the most reliable window, with clear days and cool nights. The rainy season brings dramatic cloud, waterfalls at full volume, and roads that can be difficult.
Harare and the central plateau are mild year-round because of the altitude. The city is comfortable from April to September and hot in October and November. If your trip is a city stop plus Victoria Falls, the falls will dictate the timing.
The cheapest time to go
January to March is low season almost everywhere: the rains keep casual visitors away, lodges discount, and the country is green and quiet. The trade-off is that some remote roads become difficult, and wildlife disperses into the bush rather than gathering at water.
November is the underrated shoulder month — hot and dry, with the first rains arriving late in the month, prices still low and the parks quiet. It is a good compromise if you want value without the mud.
| Window | Why it is cheaper |
|---|---|
| WindowJan–Mar | Why it is cheaperRainy season; low demand, discounted lodges |
| WindowNov | Why it is cheaperHeat and pre-rains; shoulder pricing, quiet parks |
| WindowOct | Why it is cheaperHot and dry; peak game viewing at off-peak prices |
Avoiding the crowds
Zimbabwe is not as crowded as Kenya or South Africa, but Victoria Falls fills in July, August and December. If you want the falls without the queues, aim for May or late September. If you want Hwange without other vehicles at every sighting, October is better than August despite the heat.
- Book falls accommodation 3–6 months ahead for July and August.
- Visit the falls early morning; tour buses arrive mid-morning.
- Choose a private conservancy or a smaller camp for quieter game viewing.
- Avoid the Christmas and New Year week if you want space.
What to pack by season
| Season | Pack |
|---|---|
| SeasonMay–Aug (dry, cool) | PackLayers, fleece for mornings, warm hat for game drives, sun cream |
| SeasonSep–Oct (hot, dry) | PackLight long sleeves, wide-brim hat, rehydration salts, dust-proof bag |
| SeasonNov–Mar (rains) | PackWaterproof shell, quick-dry trousers, insect repellent, dry bag |
Whatever the season, bring binoculars, a torch, and more memory cards than you think you need. Neutral colours matter for walking safaris; bright white and blue are best avoided.
Questions people ask
What is the best month to visit Victoria Falls?
May to August gives the best balance: strong water flow, clearer views and good light. April has the highest volume but heavy spray can obscure the falls, while October to December is low water with the rock face exposed.
When is the best time for a Zimbabwe safari?
July to October is the dry season, when animals concentrate around water and Hwange's game viewing is at its best. October has the best sightings but the highest temperatures.
Is Zimbabwe worth visiting in the rainy season?
Yes, if you value green landscapes, birding and lower prices. January to March is quiet and cheap, but some remote roads are difficult and wildlife is harder to see.
How hot does Zimbabwe get?
The lowveld, including Victoria Falls and Hwange, can exceed 35°C in October. Harare sits at altitude and is milder. The Eastern Highlands are cooler still.
When should I book accommodation for Victoria Falls?
Three to six months ahead for July, August and the Christmas period. May and September are easier, and the rainy season can be booked much closer to the date.
Do I need a visa for Zimbabwe from the UK?
Check the current gov.uk entry requirements before booking. British passport holders can generally get a tourist visa on arrival, but rules and fees change, so confirm before you travel.
