Things to Do in Entebbe and Kampala
Two cities, one airport, about an hour apart. Here is how to split three days between the lake and the capital.

The short answer
Give Entebbe one night and Kampala two. In Entebbe: the Botanical Gardens, the Wildlife Education Centre and a boat on Lake Victoria. In Kampala: Kasubi Tombs, the Gaddafi National Mosque, Owino market and an evening at Ndere. The drive between them takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.

Entebbe or Kampala — or both?
Entebbe is the airport town: green, quiet, on the lake, and small enough to walk parts of. Kampala is the capital: hills, traffic, markets, mosques and nightlife. They are close enough that you do not have to choose, and different enough that you should not skip either.
The sensible split for a short trip is one night in Entebbe at the start or end, and two nights in Kampala. If you are flying out early, spend the last night in Entebbe — the airport run from Kampala can take 90 minutes in the morning rush, and that is a stressful way to end a holiday.
Things to do in Entebbe
Entebbe is a half-day of sights plus a lake afternoon. Do not over-schedule it; the pleasure is the pace.
- 01
Entebbe Botanical Gardens
A large, slightly wild garden on the lake shore, with enormous trees, monkeys and good birdwatching. It is a pleasant hour's walk and the best-value stop in town. Go in the morning when the light is soft and the birds are active.
- 1–2 hours
- Small entry fee
- Mornings
- 02
Uganda Wildlife Education Centre
A conservation and education centre rather than a zoo, with rescued lions, shoebill storks, chimpanzees and antelope. Guided tours explain the rehabilitation work. Good for families and for anyone who wants to see a shoebill without a swamp expedition.
- 2–3 hours
- Entry fee
- Guided tours
- 03
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
A sanctuary on an island in Lake Victoria for orphaned and confiscated chimpanzees. The boat ride takes about 45 minutes each way; book ahead, and expect a full half-day including the crossing.
- Half-day
- Book ahead
- Boat included
- 04
Lake Victoria shoreline and beaches
The lake is the reason Entebbe exists. A late-afternoon drink or grilled tilapia at a lakeside lodge is the correct way to end the day — the sunsets are broad and orange, and the water is calm.
- Evening
- Free
- Lakeside lodges
Things to do in Kampala
- 01
Kasubi Tombs
The UNESCO-listed burial site of the Buganda kings, and the most important cultural site in the country. The main structure was damaged by fire in 2010 and reconstruction has been long and careful; visits are still possible and guides explain the history and the rebuilding.
- 1.5 hours
- Entry fee
- Guided visit
- 02
Gaddafi National Mosque
On Old Kampala hill, with a minaret you can climb for the best panorama in the city. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times; dress modestly and expect a small entry fee that includes a guide.
- 1 hour
- Small fee
- Dress modestly
- 03
Owino Market
Kampala's enormous second-hand and household market — clothes, shoes, fabric, kitchenware, everything. It is intense and genuinely local. Go with a guide, keep valuables at the hotel, and treat it as a cultural visit rather than a shopping trip.
- 1–2 hours
- Free
- With a guide
- 04
Ndere Cultural Centre
A theatre and restaurant complex dedicated to Ugandan dance, music and storytelling. The evening performances are the best single introduction to the country's cultures, and the food is good.
- Evening
- Ticket fee
- Book ahead
- 05
Independence Monument and the CBD
A short city walk around the monument, the parliament area and the older streets. Useful for orientation, and best done with a guide who can explain what you are looking at.
- 1 hour
- Free
- Daytime
- 06
Craft markets and galleries
The National Theatre craft market and several galleries around Kololo sell bark cloth, basketry, beadwork and contemporary art. Better quality and better prices than airport shops.
- 1 hour
- Free entry
- Kololo and CBD

Two practical rules make this work. First, do the Kampala sights in the morning and early afternoon; traffic builds from about 4pm and cross-city movement becomes unpredictable. Second, keep the last night in Entebbe if your flight is before noon.
Where to stay
- 01
Entebbe — lakeside lodges
Quiet, green, close to the airport and the gardens. Best for the first or last night, and for birdwatching.
- 1 night
- Airport 10–15 min
- Mid to upscale
- 02
Kampala — Kololo and Nakasero
Central, safe, walkable in parts, with most of the good hotels and restaurants. The practical base for a city stay.
- 2 nights
- Central
- Mid to upscale
- 03
Kampala — Bugolobi and Muyenga
Quieter residential areas with good guesthouses and a growing restaurant scene. Cheaper than Kololo, still close enough.
- Budget to mid
- Residential
- Car useful
Getting between Entebbe and Kampala
The 40-kilometre drive is the most unpredictable part of the trip. Outside peak hours it takes 45 to 60 minutes. Between 7 and 9am, or 5 and 8pm, allow 90 minutes or more. There is no practical train alternative for visitors.
- Use a hotel-arranged transfer or a ride-hailing app. Bolt and Uber both operate in Kampala and Entebbe.
- Boda bodas (motorbike taxis) are fast and everywhere, but the accident risk is real. Wear a helmet if you use one, and avoid them after dark.
- Special hire taxis are the traditional option; agree the fare before you get in.
- For day trips, hire a car and driver rather than assembling rides.

When to go
Uganda straddles the equator, so temperatures are steady and the variable is rain. The drier months are December to February and June to August. The heavier rains fall from March to May and again in September to November, usually as short afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle.
| Period | Conditions |
|---|---|
| PeriodDec–Feb | ConditionsDry, warm, good for the lake and city. Peak season. |
| PeriodMar–May | ConditionsMain rains. Green, cheaper, some road flooding. |
| PeriodJun–Aug | ConditionsDry and comfortable. Good for combining with gorilla trekking. |
| PeriodSep–Nov | ConditionsShort rains. Still workable, with afternoon showers. |
Safety and local rules
Kampala is a busy city with the usual urban risks: pickpocketing, bag snatching from moving vehicles, and opportunistic theft at night. Entebbe is quieter. The bigger practical risks are road traffic and, for some travellers, local laws that differ sharply from the UK.
- Do not carry bags loosely in traffic; phone snatching from boda bodas is common.
- Use ride-hailing after dark and avoid walking in unfamiliar areas at night.
- Same-sex relationships are criminalised in Uganda. Check gov.uk advice and take it seriously when planning travel.
- Photography of military, police and government buildings is restricted.
- Check the gov.uk entry requirements again before you fly; health screening rules can change.
This is one of the pages where the official advice matters more than any travel blog, including this one. Read the gov.uk travel advice for Uganda in full before booking.
What to eat
Ugandan food is built on matoke — steamed green banana — served with groundnut sauce, beans, greens or meat. Luwombo is the celebration dish: chicken or beef steamed in banana leaves. And a rolex is not a watch; it is a chapati rolled around an omelette, and it is the best cheap breakfast in East Africa.
- Rolex — chapati, egg, tomato and onion. Ask for it with avocado.
- Luwombo — banana-leaf steamed chicken or beef, for a proper dinner.
- Grilled tilapia — eaten by the lake, with your hands, which is the correct method.
- Matoke and groundnut sauce — the everyday plate; try it once properly.
- Fresh fruit — pineapple, mango and jackfruit are exceptional and cheap.
Questions people ask
How far is Entebbe from Kampala?
About 40 kilometres. The drive takes 45 to 60 minutes outside peak hours and 90 minutes or more during the morning and evening rush. Allow extra time for an international departure.
How many days do you need for Entebbe and Kampala?
Three days is the right minimum: one night in Entebbe and two in Kampala. Add a fourth day if you want Ngamba Island, which takes half a day including the boat crossing.
Is Entebbe worth staying in?
Yes, especially for the first or last night. The Botanical Gardens, the Wildlife Education Centre and the lake make it more than an airport town, and it removes the stress of a long transfer before an early flight.
Do I need a visa for Uganda from the UK?
Yes. Apply online before travel and print the letter of authorisation with the barcode to show on arrival. An East African tourist visa is also available and covers Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda for 90 days.
Is Kampala safe for tourists?
Generally yes, with normal big-city precautions. Petty theft and traffic are the main risks. Check gov.uk travel advice in full, particularly regarding local laws, before you travel.
What is the best time to visit Uganda?
December to February and June to August are the driest and most comfortable. The rains from March to May and September to November bring short heavy showers but lower prices and greener landscapes.
