The short answer
British citizens need a visa to visit Ghana, a passport valid for at least six months after arrival, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Apply through the Ghana High Commission in London; standard processing takes 10 to 15 days, with an express in-person option in about three days. Start at least a month before departure.

Do UK citizens need a visa for Ghana?
Yes. A full British citizen passport holder needs a visa before travelling to Ghana for tourism, family visits or business. There is no visa-free entry and no general visa-on-arrival route for UK passport holders, so the visa is the first thing to sort — not the last.
The exception is Ghanaian-British dual nationals, who can register for a dual nationality card and use it to show they do not need a visa. Everyone else, including British citizens travelling on a different passport, should check their own category with the Ghana High Commission before booking flights.
Which Ghana visa do you need?
The High Commission issues several categories, and the one you choose has to match the reason for travel. Applying under the wrong category is one of the most common reasons an application is delayed or refused.
| Purpose | Typical category | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| PurposeHoliday or family visit | Typical categoryTourist visa | What to have readyItinerary, accommodation address, return flight |
| PurposeMeetings, conference or site visit | Typical categoryBusiness visa | What to have readyUK employer letter and Ghanaian host invitation |
| PurposeStopping over en route | Typical categoryTransit visa | What to have readyOnward ticket and visa for the final destination |
| PurposeFrequent travel | Typical categoryMultiple-entry visa | What to have readyEvidence of repeated visits or business need |
If you are travelling for a family event, a wedding or a funeral, say so plainly in your covering letter and include the invitation. Consular officers are assessing whether the stated purpose is credible, and a clear paper trail makes that easy.
How to apply for a Ghana visa from the UK
- Complete the online visa application form on the Ghana High Commission website.
- Pay the visa fee online. The amount changes, so check the current fee on the High Commission site rather than relying on an old figure.
- Upload your supporting documents. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is among the required documents, not an optional extra.
- Print the completed form and attach hard copies of your documents.
- Post the pack to the address given on the High Commission website, using a tracked service.
- Wait for processing — typically 10 to 15 days — and check that the visa is correct before you fly.
There is an express route: the Ghana Premium Application Centre in London offers in-person service that can turn an application around in roughly three days. It costs more and requires an appointment, but it is the sensible option if your departure is close.
If you are applying for several people, post the applications together but keep each pack physically separate and clearly labelled. Family applications that arrive loose are a common cause of delay.

Passport validity and document rules
Your passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the date you arrive in Ghana. This is checked at check-in and again on arrival, so a passport with five months left is not a judgement call — it is a denial of boarding.
The passport must be genuine, undamaged and not reported lost or stolen. If you have renewed recently, travel on the new passport and carry the old one separately only if you need the visas inside it.
- Check the expiry date against your return date, not your departure date.
- Make sure the name matches your ticket exactly — no shortened first names.
- Keep a photo of the passport and visa page on your phone and in the cloud.
- If you have fewer than two blank pages, renew before applying; visa stickers need space.
Yellow fever and health requirements
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is a condition of entry to Ghana. You must have the certificate to support your visa application and to show on arrival. Since 2016 the certificate is valid for life under World Health Organization rules, so an old certificate may still count — but the name on it must match your passport.
Get the vaccination at a UK travel clinic or GP surgery that offers it, and allow at least ten days before travel for it to take effect. Yellow fever vaccine is not available at every GP practice, so book early.
- Malaria: Accra and the coast are risk areas. Speak to a travel clinic about prophylaxis for your itinerary.
- Routine vaccinations: check measles, mumps and rubella, tetanus, diphtheria and polio are up to date.
- Hepatitis A and typhoid: commonly recommended for UK travellers to Ghana.
- Travel insurance: confirm it covers medical treatment and repatriation, not just cancellation.
Arriving at Kotoka International Airport
Kotoka International Airport (ACC) sits close to central Accra, Osu and Airport Residential, so the transfer is short outside peak traffic. The airport is modern but busy at peak arrival times, and the queue order is immigration, baggage, customs.
- Have your passport, visa and yellow fever certificate in hand — not in the hold.
- Fill in the arrival form on board if one is handed out, and have your accommodation address ready.
- Use the official taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer. Ignore unsolicited offers inside the terminal.
- Keep baggage receipts. Customs may ask you to open cases, particularly on electronics.
If someone is meeting you, agree on a meeting point outside arrivals. Arrivals halls are crowded and mobile signal can be patchy at the doors.
Customs, cash and what to declare
Ghana has strict currency rules. You must declare all hard currency on arrival using the declaration form, and you cannot bring in more than the Ghanaian cedi equivalent of 10,000 US dollars. Carrying more can mean the entire amount is confiscated — not just the excess.
Declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty, including large quantities of electronics, professional equipment or goods for resale. Keep receipts for high-value items you are bringing temporarily.
| Item | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| ItemCash | Practical guidanceDeclare it. Stay under the USD 10,000 equivalent. |
| ItemPrescription medicine | Practical guidanceKeep it in original packaging with the prescription. |
| ItemElectronics | Practical guidanceExpect questions on multiple new devices; keep receipts. |
| ItemFood and plants | Practical guidanceCheck restrictions before packing; many items are prohibited. |
Money and connectivity before you land
The Ghanaian cedi is the local currency. Cards work in hotels, supermarkets and larger restaurants in Accra, but markets, taxis and smaller towns still run on cash. Mobile money is used widely, and a local SIM is the easiest way to pay for small things.
- Change a small amount at the airport for the first taxi, then use banks or reputable bureaux.
- Carry low-denomination notes; change is often scarce.
- Buy a local SIM from MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo at the airport or in town — registration needs your passport.
- Download an offline map of Accra before you fly; data is cheap but coverage is uneven.
Business trips and family visits
Business travellers should carry a letter from their UK employer stating the purpose and duration of the trip, plus an invitation from the Ghanaian company. The visa category must say business — a tourist visa used for meetings creates a problem at immigration, not at the airport coffee bar.
Family visitors should have the host's address, phone number and a copy of their Ghanaian ID or residence permit. If you are staying for more than a few weeks, ask your host about registration requirements; stays of 90 days or more in a calendar year can trigger non-citizen registration rules.
Common mistakes that delay UK travellers
- Applying too late. Ten to fifteen working days is the standard service, not the worst case.
- Sending photocopies where originals are required, or posting without tracking.
- Forgetting that the yellow fever certificate is needed for the visa pack, not just for arrival.
- Booking a flight before the visa is issued, then discovering the passport has five months left.
- Declaring nothing at customs while carrying more than the equivalent of USD 10,000.
- Assuming a UK driving licence is enough ID — carry your passport for official checks.
None of these are exotic. They are the ordinary paperwork failures that turn a straightforward trip into a missed flight, and every one of them is avoidable with a checklist and four weeks of runway.
Questions people ask
Can UK citizens get a visa on arrival in Ghana?
No, not as a general rule. British citizen passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling. Apply through the Ghana High Commission in London, or use the express in-person service at the Ghana Premium Application Centre if your departure is close.
How long does a Ghana visa take from the UK?
Standard processing is usually 10 to 15 working days after the High Commission receives your posted application. The express in-person service in London can complete in around three days. Add time for postage and for any request for extra documents.
How much does a Ghana visa cost?
The fee is set by the High Commission and changes periodically, and the express service costs more than the standard route. Check the current fee on the Ghana High Commission website before you pay rather than relying on an older figure.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Ghana?
Yes. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Ghana and is also part of the visa application pack. The certificate is valid for life under WHO rules, but the name must match your passport exactly.
How long must my passport be valid for Ghana?
At least six months beyond your date of arrival. Airlines check this at check-in and Ghanaian immigration checks it again on arrival, so renew early if you are close to the limit.
Can I extend my Ghana visa after arriving?
Yes. Apply in person at the Ghana Immigration Service office on Independence Avenue in Accra, with the extension form and photographs, before your current permission expires. Do not wait until the last day.
How much cash can I bring into Ghana?
You must declare all hard currency on arrival, and you cannot bring in more than the cedi equivalent of 10,000 US dollars. Amounts at or above that limit can be confiscated in full, so declare accurately and stay under the threshold.
