Ghana Visa Cost from the UK

The visa fee is only part of the bill. Here is the full cost of getting a Ghana visa from the UK, including the extras that catch people out.

Last checked 1 November 2026

The short answer

Budget for four things, not one: the consular visa fee, a yellow fever vaccination, passport photos, and tracked postage. The consular fee is set by the Ghana High Commission and changes, so confirm it on their site before you pay. The UK-side extras typically add £70–£150 per applicant, and the express in-person service costs more than the standard postal route.

What a Ghana visa actually costs

Most people search for a single number and find nothing reliable, because there isn't one fixed price. A Ghana visa from the UK is made up of a consular fee plus several smaller costs, and only some of them are under your control.

Ranges reflect typical UK costs in 2026. The consular fee is deliberately not quoted here because it changes and an out-of-date figure is worse than none.

The consular fee, and why it moves

The High Commission sets the fee, collects it online as part of the application, and publishes the current amount on its own site. It varies by visa category — a transit visa is not priced like a multiple-entry business visa — and it is quoted per applicant, including children.

Two practical consequences. First, a family of four pays four consular fees plus four vaccination certificates, which is why family applications surprise people. Second, if your application is refused or returned for missing documents, you generally do not get the fee back — so accuracy is cheaper than speed.

  • Check the fee on the High Commission site, not a third-party agent page.
  • Pay in the currency and method the site specifies — usually online, as part of the form.
  • Keep the payment receipt; you may need it if the application is queried.
  • If an agent offers to 'handle everything', ask what their fee is on top of the consular fee.

The costs people forget

The visa fee is the headline. These are the line items that turn a £100 assumption into a £250 trip to the post office.

  1. 01

    Yellow fever vaccination

A certificate is required for the visa pack and for entry. It is not free on the NHS for travel in most cases, and not every GP offers it. Travel clinics in London charge more than provincial ones.

    • £50–£120
    • Book 2–3 weeks ahead
    • Valid for life
  2. 02

    Compliant photographs

Ghana visa photos have specific size and background requirements. A rejected photo means a returned application and a second postage bill.

    • £8–£15
    • Check the spec first
  3. 03

    Tracked postage both ways

You post originals; the passport comes back by courier or special delivery. Budget for both legs, and never send documents untracked.

    • £8–£15 each way
    • Keep the tracking number
  4. 04

    The express premium

The in-person service in London can turn an application around in about three days. It costs more than the standard route and requires an appointment, plus travel if you are not in London.

    • Extra fee
    • Appointment required
    • Travel costs
  5. 05

Passport renewal, if you are close to expiry

Ghana requires six months' validity beyond arrival. If your passport fails that test, the visa fee is wasted until you renew — and the renewal is the largest single cost in this list.

    • Check before applying
    • Weeks, not days

Standard or express: the real trade-off

Standard processing takes 10 to 15 working days after the High Commission receives your posted pack. Express, in person at the Premium Application Centre in London, can complete in around three days for a higher fee.

The express route buys time, not certainty. It still requires a complete application and the same supporting documents.

What a mistake costs

Visa costs are asymmetric: the fee is modest, the failure cost is not. A returned application usually means a second postage bill, a delay of two weeks, and sometimes a second fee. A refused application can mean a lost fare and a lost hotel deposit.

  1. Missing yellow fever certificate — the single most common omission, and it stops the application at the desk.
  2. Passport with under six months' validity — the application cannot succeed, whatever else is correct.
  3. Photographs that do not meet the specification — cheap to fix, expensive in time.
  4. Wrong visa category — a tourist visa used for business meetings creates a problem on arrival.
  5. Sending originals untracked — unrecoverable, and it happens.

None of these are rare edge cases. They are the ordinary reasons applications come back, and each one costs more than doing it correctly the first time.

Families, children and business travellers

Every traveller needs their own visa, including infants and children. That means the consular fee, a vaccination certificate where required, photographs and postage multiplied by the number of passports. For a family of four, the UK-side extras alone can reach £300 before the consular fees.

Business travellers should budget for the correct category and a supporting letter from their employer, plus an invitation from the Ghanaian host. Applying in the wrong category to save a small fee is a false economy when it delays a trip.

The practical conclusion: the visa itself is rarely the expensive part of a Ghana trip. Flights are. Budget the visa properly, apply early, and put the saved express premium towards a better fare.

Questions people ask

How much is a Ghana visa from the UK?

The consular fee is set by the Ghana High Commission and changes, so confirm the current amount on their website. On top of it, budget roughly £75–£165 per adult for the yellow fever vaccination, photographs and tracked postage.

Is the Ghana visa fee refundable?

Generally no. If an application is refused or returned for missing documents, the consular fee is usually retained. That is why checking the passport validity, photographs and yellow fever certificate before posting matters.

Do children need their own Ghana visa?

Yes. Each traveller, including infants, needs a visa and therefore pays the consular fee and the associated costs. A family of four should budget four times the per-person extras.

Is the express service worth the extra cost?

Only if your departure is inside about three weeks. Standard processing takes 10–15 working days; if you have four weeks of runway, the express premium buys nothing you need.

Can I get the yellow fever vaccination on the NHS?

Often not for travel purposes. Some GP surgeries provide it, but many people pay at a travel clinic. Book two to three weeks before travel so the certificate is valid and any reaction has settled.

What happens if my passport expires soon?

Ghana requires at least six months' validity after arrival. If you are close to that limit, renew first — a visa in a passport that fails the validity test is wasted money.
