Best Places to Visit in Harare

A green, walkable capital that rewards a slow two days — and has three day trips worth building a trip around.

The short answer

Harare is a two- to three-night city. Spend a day in the CBD for the National Gallery, Harare Gardens and the Museum of Human Sciences, a morning at Mbare Musika for the market, and keep a full day for Domboshava or Chinhoyi Caves. It is a base for Zimbabwe, not the whole trip.

How Harare is laid out

Harare is one of the greener African capitals — jacarandas, wide avenues and a low skyline — and it is more spread out than it looks. The CBD holds the museums and galleries. The northern suburbs (Avondale, Borrowdale, Mount Pleasant) hold the restaurants, guesthouses and shopping. The high-density suburbs to the south and west are where most people actually live.

  1. 01

    CBD

Museums, galleries, the Gardens and the old colonial architecture. Busy in the day, quiet after 5pm. Stay here only if you want to walk to sights.

    • Daytime
    • Walkable core
    • Limited evening food
  2. 02

    Avondale and Borrowdale

The practical base: guesthouses, restaurants, supermarkets and easy access north to the day trips. You will need a car or ride-hailing.

    • Best for visitors
    • Restaurants
    • Car useful
  3. 03

    Milton Park and Belgravia

Quieter, central-ish, with a handful of good small hotels and cafés. A reasonable compromise between CBD access and suburban comfort.

    • Quiet
    • Central
    • Small hotels

The best places to visit in Harare

Entry fees are modest and change without notice; carry US dollars in small notes, which is what most places prefer. Opening hours in the CBD are shorter than you might expect, and some museums close on Mondays.

  1. 01

    National Gallery of Zimbabwe

The best single stop in the city. A strong collection of Zimbabwean and southern African contemporary art, plus sculpture in the garden. Small enough for two hours, serious enough to be worth planning around.

    • 1.5–2 hours
    • Small entry fee
    • Closed Mondays
  2. 02

    Harare Gardens

The city's main public garden, next to the gallery and the museum. Not a destination in itself, but a genuinely pleasant hour under mature trees, and a good place to reset between sights.

    • 1 hour
    • Free
    • Central
  3. 03

    Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences

Archaeology, ethnography and natural history in a slightly old-fashioned museum. The rock-art and early-human exhibits give context to Domboshava and the country's deeper history.

    • 1–1.5 hours
    • Small entry fee
    • Near the Gardens
  4. 04

    Mbare Musika

Harare's largest and most authentic market — produce, second-hand clothing, household goods, and a lot of noise. Not curated for visitors. Go with someone local, leave valuables behind, and ask before taking photographs.

    • 1–2 hours
    • Free
    • Mornings, with a guide
  5. 05

    Avondale Flea Market

Weekend craft and curio market in the northern suburbs. Easier than Mbare for a first visit, with stone sculpture, textiles and woodwork. Prices are negotiable but start fair.

    • Weekends
    • Free entry
    • Suburban
  6. 06

    Balancing Rocks

The precariously stacked granite formations in Epworth, south-east of the city, that appear on Zimbabwe's banknotes. A short stop, best combined with a drive out of town.

    • 30–45 minutes
    • Small fee
    • Short drive
  7. 07

    Domboshava Hills

Granite hills about 40 minutes north with San rock paintings, cave shelters and a view back over the plateau. The walk is short but steep in places; go early for cool air and better light.

    • Half-day
    • Small fee
    • 40 min from city
  8. 08

    Chinhoyi Caves

A limestone cave system with the startling blue Sleeping Pool, about 90 minutes north-west. Guided walks take you down to the water; the colour is the reason people make the trip.

    • Full-day or long half-day
    • Entry fee
    • 90 min each way
  9. 09

    Lake Chivero and Kuimba Shiri

A recreational park and bird sanctuary west of the city, good for a slow afternoon, a boat trip and a meal by the water. Kuimba Shiri runs bird-of-prey displays and rehabilitation work.

    • Half-day
    • Entry fee
    • 30–40 min from city
  10. 10

    Eastgate Centre

Not a sight for its shops — for the building. A 1990s landmark of Zimbabwean architecture modelled on the granite outcrops of the plateau, with natural cooling and a memorable interior.

    • 20 minutes
    • Free
    • CBD

How many days do you need?

Two nights covers the city comfortably. Three lets you add Domboshava or Lake Chivero without compressing the CBD into a single afternoon. Harare is rarely the reason people fly to Zimbabwe — it is the gateway to Victoria Falls, Hwange and the Eastern Highlands — so treat it as a measured first stop rather than the main event.

Getting around Harare

Ride-hailing works in Harare — InDrive and Bolt are the common apps — but availability thins out at night and outside the northern suburbs. Many visitors hire a car with a driver for the day, which is also the easiest way to reach Domboshava and Chinhoyi.

  • Agree the fare or use the app; avoid unmarked taxis at the airport.
  • Fuel shortages happen. If you hire a car, ask the operator how they handle fuel.
  • Power cuts are routine; a guesthouse with a generator or solar backup is worth choosing deliberately.
  • Cash is king. US dollars in small notes solve most situations; card acceptance is uneven.
  • The airport is about 25 to 40 minutes from the northern suburbs depending on traffic.

Indicative October 2026. Zimbabwe operates a multi-currency economy; US dollars are widely accepted and often preferred.

A day trip to Chinhoyi with a driver and fuel adds roughly £70–£110. Domboshava is closer and cheaper, around £45–£70 for the half-day.

When to visit Harare

Harare sits on a plateau at about 1,500 metres, so it is milder than the rest of Zimbabwe. The dry winter from May to August is cool and clear — cold at night, pleasant by day. The rains run from November to March, bringing green landscapes, afternoon storms and muddy roads. September and October are hot and dry before the rains break.

PeriodApr–MayConditionsPost-rains, green, clear, comfortable. Arguably the best window.
PeriodJun–AugConditionsDry and cool. Cold mornings; bring a jacket.
PeriodSep–OctConditionsHot, dry, dusty. Good for wildlife, less comfortable in the city.
PeriodNov–MarConditionsRainy season. Lush, cheaper, short heavy afternoon storms.

Is Harare safe for visitors?

Harare is generally calm, and visitors rarely encounter violent crime. The usual precautions apply, with extra attention in the CBD after dark and in crowded markets.

  • Keep bags zipped and phones out of sight in the CBD and at Mbare.
  • Use ride-hailing or a known driver after dark rather than walking.
  • Carry small US dollar notes; large notes are hard to change.
  • Avoid political gatherings and demonstrations.
  • Check gov.uk travel advice before travelling — the economic situation can change quickly.

What to eat in Harare

Zimbabwean food is substantial and maize-based: sadza (thick maize meal) with relish, muriwo (greens), roadrunner chicken and grilled meat. The northern suburbs have a good spread of cafés and international restaurants, and the city takes coffee seriously.

  • Sadza and beef stew — the national plate; eat it at a proper local restaurant.
  • Roadrunner chicken — free-range bird, usually grilled or stewed, worth ordering.
  • Muriwo and dovi — greens in peanut butter, the vegetarian dish to know.
  • Mazoe — the soft drink; try the original before the flavours.
  • Biltong and droëwors — ubiquitous, and better than the airport versions.

Questions people ask

Is Harare worth visiting?

Yes, for two or three nights as a gateway to Zimbabwe. The National Gallery, the markets and the day trips to Domboshava and Chinhoyi justify the stop, but most visitors pair it with Victoria Falls or Hwange.

How many days do you need in Harare?

Two nights covers the city core. Three gives you a half-day trip to Domboshava or Lake Chivero without rushing the museums and markets.

What is the best time to visit Harare?

April to May and August to October. April and May follow the rains and are green and clear; August to October is dry and good for wildlife, though September and October get hot.

Do I need a visa for Zimbabwe from the UK?

Check the current gov.uk entry requirements before booking. British passport holders can generally obtain a visa on arrival for tourism, but the rules and fees change, so confirm before you fly.

Can I use cards in Harare?

Sometimes, but not reliably. Cards work in larger hotels and supermarkets; markets, taxis and smaller places want cash. Carry US dollars in small denominations and keep a reserve.

How do I get from Harare to Victoria Falls?

The quickest option is a domestic flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes. Driving takes a full day — roughly 700 kilometres — and is only worth it if you are building a road trip through Hwange.
