London to Accra Flight Costs by Month

Accra fares swing by several hundred pounds across the year. Here is which months are cheap, which are not, and why.

Last checked 1 November 2026

The short answer

Return fares from London to Accra typically sit around £500–£650 in shoulder months, rise to £650–£850 around December and the July–August school holidays, and soften to roughly £470–£560 in September–November and late January–March. Book six to ten weeks ahead for normal months, and three months ahead for December.

What a London to Accra return actually costs

The fares below are indicative return prices for economy, based on AirSaffar quotes for 2026 departures from London. They include taxes and one checked bag where the airline's fare brand allows it. They are a planning tool, not a quote — the exact price depends on dates, availability and how far ahead you book.

Indicative economy returns from London, checked November 2026. Direct services price higher than one-stop routings.

Two things move the number more than anything else: whether you fly direct, and whether your dates overlap a school holiday or December. A direct British Airways service from Heathrow carries a premium over a one-stop routing through Amsterdam, Istanbul, Casablanca or Addis Ababa — often £80–£180 return, sometimes more at peak.

What moves Accra fares

Accra is a business and diaspora route, not a leisure route that empties out. That makes the seasonal pattern different from a holiday destination: demand stays reasonably firm all year, and the peaks come from specific events rather than sunshine.

  • December and early January — 'Detty December' brings the diaspora home for parties, weddings and family events. It is the single most expensive period.
  • July and August — UK school holidays. Families travelling together push up prices for six weeks.
  • Easter week — a short, sharp spike; the weeks either side are normal.
  • Half-terms — late May and late October, mainly on direct services.
  • Capacity — a reduction in direct frequencies raises the floor price quickly on this route.
  • Fuel and currency — airline costs passed through as surcharges, usually on the total fare.

Less obvious: one-way fares to Accra are often disproportionately expensive because the route is built around return traffic. If you only need one way, compare a return and discard the inbound — sometimes it is cheaper than a one-way ticket.

Last-minute rarely helps on this route. Accra is not a market where unsold seats get dumped cheaply — business traffic absorbs them. Waiting inside two weeks usually costs more, not less.

Days, times and connections

Midweek departures — Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — are consistently cheaper than Friday and Sunday, which carry the diaspora weekend traffic. Evening departures from Heathrow sometimes price lower than morning ones on the same day.

  • Fly out Tuesday–Thursday where possible; avoid Friday and Sunday.
  • Return midweek rather than on a Sunday.
  • One-stop routings add 3–8 hours but can save £80–£180 return.
  • Check the connection time; a tight transfer through Istanbul or Addis is not worth the saving.
  • Night arrivals in Accra mean a taxi at an awkward hour — price that in.

The extras that change the real price

A £520 fare and a £520 fare are not always the same product. The differences show up after you have paid.

Baggage allowances vary sharply between fare brands on the same airline. Always compare the total, not the headline.

For a family of four, a 'cheap' hand-baggage-only fare plus four checked bags can end up more expensive than a higher fare that includes luggage. Compare the total trip cost, not the seat price.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest month to fly from London to Accra?

September after the first week, and late January through March. November is also strong value before the December surge. Expect roughly £470–£560 return in those windows.

Why are flights to Accra so expensive in December?

December is 'Detty December', when the Ghanaian diaspora returns for parties, weddings and family events. Demand outstrips capacity for three to four weeks, and fares typically reach £650–£850 return.

Is it cheaper to fly direct or with a stop?

One-stop routings through Amsterdam, Istanbul, Casablanca or Addis Ababa are often £80–£180 cheaper return. Direct Heathrow services cost more but save three to eight hours each way.

How far in advance should I book London to Accra?

Six to ten weeks for normal months, two to three months for July and August, and three to four months for December. Last-minute booking rarely produces a lower fare on this route.

Are one-way flights to Accra expensive?

Often disproportionately so, because the route is priced around return traffic. Sometimes a return ticket is cheaper than a one-way — compare both before booking.

Do I need a visa before booking flights?

You need a visa to travel, and it is sensible to confirm eligibility before committing to a non-refundable fare. See our Ghana visa cost guide for the full budget.
